It’s Success Sunday! Every Sunday we share a success story from someone we’ve been coaching. Today we’d like to share Katie’s story. Her transformation is amazing! We are so excited for her! This is Katie’s story of how she lost 35 pounds.
Time for a Change
About seven months ago, I decided to make a change. I remembered a time where I liked to look in the mirror, enjoyed trying on clothes, and wore more than sweatpants everywhere I possibly could. I convinced myself it was just another “symptom” of pharmacy school; that I had just gained my “freshman fifteen” a couple years after college started, and that it had nothing to do with eating my boyfriend’s homework (pastry chef school) every night and refusing to exercise.
My freshman 15 had turned into a freshman 35, landing me at 175 at my heaviest (I’ve always yo-yo’d around 140). I had also figured I had too many factors against me to do anything about my unhappiness related to my weight. I had just quit smoking cigarrettes, with a slow thyroid (slower metabolism), also taking a medication that causes extreme weight gain, while in an intensely stressful doctoral program, and a boyfriend that showered me with pastries as support and motivation.
Facing Medical Problems
Then I actually started having medical problems; at 22 years old I found myself in crippling pain in the ER and was told I could lose weight to help the problem. In pharmacy school we learned about how most diseases are related to personal behaviors and lifestyle choices but I didn’t think I would be one of those patients. So I started physical therapy, but I couldn’t keep the appointments due to my sporadic and hectic schedule. Then my mom had a fall and broke her leg.
I knew I had to do something to start maintaining my body if I wanted to be able to make good use of it for the rest of my life. If anything, I wanted to be limited by my own mind, not by my body. I wanted to have good nutrition so my body could be strong enough to repair itself or fight off any disease. I wanted/needed to have the energy to get off of the couch. And I knew the only way to do that was to just start moving.
So I started with Brazil Butt Lift, since my mom had just bought it (right before she broke her leg). I used it for one month, and then did another two months of Brazil Butt Lift while adding in Hip Hop Abs. My goal was to work up to INSANITY, which is what I had attempted three years prior and had to stop after 3 days. After 3 months of BBL/HHA combo I felt ready to leap into INSANITY. With insanity I was able to reach my final weight goal of 135. Before I had even started working out, though, I started with a total deconstruction of how I thought about and used food. The first step was to stop spending money on fast food. Then I stopped spending money on Starbucks, and substituted my daily Starbucks with a daily Shakeology. The first day I noticed reduced cravings, and I’ve been hooked ever since.
I’ve Regained My Life
Recently I’ve slipped a little, but I’m back on the horse! I wake up around 4:30 during the week to do Turbo Fire before I head to work now, and I feel so much better. I have still have Shakeology for breakfast every day, and loving that I’m now on this journey with my mom since her leg has healed. I’ve lost 35lbs, but more importantly I’ve regained control over my life in a positive way. Every day I take an hour for myself to make myself better, stronger, faster, and more mentally fit. Every day I’m making choices to improve my life, and helping others to improve theirs as well. This really is a lifelong journey, and I’m so grateful to be able to share it with so many wonderful people!
